BOYS SOCCER WINS CLASS D1 CHAMPIONSHIP
The Finney Falcons boys varsity soccer team picked up the Section V Class D1 Championship last night, winning by a score of 2-0. Their opponent was the Jasper-Troupsberg Wildcats, the #3 seed in the class.
The game was hosted by Hornell High School, who provided a great facility and game experience for the contest. Finney took the lead in the first half on a breakaway goal scored by Keegan Ocorr. Finney's second goal came in the second half off the foot of Emmanuel Rubingu, taking advantage of one of the only times the goalkeeper for J-T was out of position.
Coach Stephen Merritt said, "Well rounded game played by the whole team. Special highlight to Stephen Folkerts (GK) and the defense, who have only let in 7 goals across 19 games." Finney's stout defense and high-powered offense have resulted in a total of 101 goals scored this season, allowing only 10 goals all year.
Both teams entered the Class D1 with first-round byes. The Wildcats defeated #6 Honeoye and #2 Mount Morris to advance to the final. The Falcons took on #8 Genesee Valley and #4 Fillmore.
The Finney Falcons will next face the Class D2 champions, Avoca, for the overall Class D title.
